Pioneering the Future of Medicine in Space

Humanity is entering a new era of exploration. As commercial and professional spaceflight expands, so does the urgent need for safe, effective and non-pharmaceutical approaches to astronaut health. This research project seeks to answer a groundbreaking question: Can acupuncture provide a safe and effective countermeasure to the physiological stressors of spaceflight?

The Research Project

In October 2025, a parabolic flight experiment will test the feasibility and safety of acupuncture as a countermeasure for nausea and nervous system dysregulation during extreme g-force transitions.

This pilot study, conducted in collaboration with a globally recognized aerospace research institution, represents one of the first formal explorations of acupuncture in a spaceflight environment.

Our objectives are:

  • To validate the safety of auricular acupuncture under conditions of rapid gravitational change.
  • To measure nervous system responses (HRV, Blood Pressure and subjective experience.
  • To explore the potential of acupuncture as a non-pharmaceutical tool for astronaut and space traveler health.

This is not just about one study. It is the first step in a larger body of research to bring integrative medicine into extreme environments, from aerospace to wilderness medicine.

Why This Matters:

  • Astronaut Health: Safe, accessible, drug-free options are critical in space, where medical interventions are limited.
  • Commercial Spaceflight: As civilians enter space, motion sickness prevention and nervous system regulation will be central concerns.
  • Terrestrial Benefits: What we learn in extreme conditions can improve healthcare on Earth, advancing treatment for holistic applications for nausea, anxiety and nervous system dysregulation.

This research bridges ancient medicine and modern exploration, expanding the possibilities of how we care for the human body beyond Earth.

About the Researcher/Principal Investigator

Dr. Chyrie Ramirez, D.A.C.M., L. Ac.

I am adoctor of Chinese medicine, acupuncturist and integrative family wellness specialist with a passion for exploring the frontiers of human health.

My journey into space medicine was deeply personal. On my son’s 3rd birthday, I submitted the proposal for this research. Five months later, on the day of my grandmother’s funeral, I received confirmation that the project would be given the opportunity to participate in the October 2025 parabolic flight campaign.

I carry both my son’s curiosity and my grandmother’s legacy with me into this work. Fresh from taking the leap and applying to NASA’s Astronaut program myself, last year, I aim to show my son (and families everywhere) that we all deserve to reach for the stars.

This project represents the intersection of my life’s passions: advancing integrative medicine, pioneering women-led space health research, and contributing to the well-being of all who venture beyond our planet.
