Have you ever thought of how to help astronaut’s feel their best in space despite being in a hostile environment that completely dysregulates your body? What about ways to blend traditional Chinese medicine philosophies and modalities like acupuncture into a modern scientific space analog environment.

Earlier this year, I, Dr. Chyrie Ramirez D.A.C.M., L. Ac., submitted a research proposal to the IIAS to explore how acupuncture effects the human body during suborbital flight. 5 months to the day, and on my grandmother’s funeral, I received a letter than my research proposal was down selected to the first phase of parabolic testing with the potential to be one of the payloads on a historic suborbital flight happening next year.

With your help, we will be conducting a one-of-a-kind observational study to experiment how safe and feasible auricular acupuncture is in parabolic flight. This study will seek to explore acupuncture’s potential as a non-pharmaceutical countermeasure for nausea and stress in space. Once we have preliminary findings from this work we can continue by proposing work with NASA’s Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) program and/or a Cooperative Research & Development Agreement (CRADA) with the US NAVSEA Division.
